Summer Institute 2009: Race, Gender and Sexuality
The 2009 NSRC Summer Institute at San Francisco State University was a four-week intensive program focused on Race, Gender, and Sexuality in the United States. Featuring preeminent sexuality scholars, Hector Carrillo, Cathy Cohen, and Lisa Diamond, whose research analyze current and historical intersections of race, sexuality and gender, this year’s summer institute critically examined the cultural, social, psychological, and political implications of those intersections.
Attended by 32 undergraduate, graduate, and continuing students, the 2009 Summer Institute connected scholars, students and advocates. Courses covered a broad range of topics from Internet Advocacy to Queer Theories, Citizenship, and Transnational Circuits of Race, Gender, and Sexuality. Participants had the choice of three tracks of learning: a sexuality education track, a service learning track, or a graduate track. Students enrolled in the sexuality education track created a curriculum during the program. Students enrolled in the service learning track interned at a local non-profit. Graduate track students furthered their research projects.
