(housing will be open Saturday, June 20)
July 20 – July 24: Graduate Student Proposal Writing Intensive
(optional for Graduate Students)
Courses and Instructors
Led by an interdisciplinary team of experts in the field of sexualities, the Summer Institute is an unique opportunity for 50-60 scholars, students and professionals to explore contemporary research and practice, develop networks in the field, and apply new knowledge in their work.
To examine the intersections of race, gender, and sexuality in the United States, we are offering a variety of traditional academic courses including history courses, theory, research methodology, and sexual health alongside practical and innovative elective courses on filmmaking, new media, creative writing and pop culture.
Undergraduate students will be able to choose from two tracks of courses. The first track, Teaching Sex, is for participants interested in sexuality education. The second undergraduate track, Service Learning, offers groups of students the opportunity to work with local community based organizations (CBOs) around sexuality activism and advocacy.
Graduate Students will receive advanced training in research methodologies and theories in sexuality, and they will have the option of enrolling in a week-long intensive Proposal Writing Workshop.

San Francisco and Learning Outside the Classroom
Outside of the classroom, students are encouraged to explore San Francisco, a city with a unique relationship to race, gender, and sexuality. San Francisco is home to numerous cultural centers including the Asian Art Museum, the Museum of African Diaspora, The Mission Cultural Center that will supplement Summer Institute participants’ analysis of race, gender, and sexuality in San Francisco and the United States.
This year, the Summer Institute overlaps with the annual LGBT Pride Celebration, including the San Francisco International LGBT Film Festival presented by Frameline as well as numerous lectures, exhibitions, and parties. In addition, participants will be taken on Sexual History Tour of the City so they’ll understand why San Francisco is the perfect place for a Summer Institute on sexuality.
