Seeking Full Professor/Research Director, Dept. of Human Sexuality Studies

    The Dept. of Human Sexuality Studies at San Francisco State University invites immediate applications for the position of Professor of Sexuality Studies and Director of the  Center for Research on Gender and Sexuality at the rank of Full Professor or Associate Professor, with tenure (pending approval of the President, as per SFSU policy).  Email hmsxdept@sfsu.edu.     We seek an outstanding senior research scholar with vision and broad knowledge of sexuality, who has achieved national visibility and leadership in the field, and who wishes to bring an established research program to a unique and growing intellectual center in the San Francisco Bay Area. Sexuality, sexual health, and sexual and reproductive rights broadly construed are pivotal to our Department’s mission of advancing sexual literacy in order to support social justice in the United States. SFSU’s Sexuality Studies (currently having 5 tenured and tenure track positions) is the only department of its kind in the United States outside of the medical sciences at a public university, offering a Master of Arts in Human Sexuality and two undergraduate Minor degrees (Human Sexuality Studies and LBGT studies). The Department has achieved both a national and international profiles and includes a research and training Institute comprised of two centers: the National Sexuality Resource Center (funded primarily by the Ford Foundation, and directed by Gilbert Herdt), and the Center for Research on Gender and Sexuality (funded by project grants, federal and foundation, awarded to faculty and other researchers/principal investigators).

    Applicants must hold a doctoral degree in the social, behavioral, or health sciences. The 

    successful candidate will bring a significant portfolio of major funded research projects 

    (federal or foundation grants) and scientific publications.  Possible areas of research and 

    teaching emphasis for this professorial position include but are not limited to: sexual health, 

    adolescent sexuality, women’s sexuality, HIV, sexuality and reproductive health and rights, 

    disability and sexualities, LGBT sexuality, and sexuality education. We seek an individual 

    with the ability to conduct research that is theoretically invigorating as well as practical and 

    useful. Additionally the successful candidate will teach one graduate seminar and advise 

    MA Sexuality Studies graduate students. The successful candidate is expected to continue 

    their own projects and research program as well as to mentor faculty in the writing of grant 

    proposals and implementation of new research projects. The person in this position must 

    possess demonstrated abilities as a team player and leader of the scientific teams.

    The interdisciplinary faculty (five full time faculty) of the department is organized with an 

    emphasis on social/behavioral science research; approximately 25 additional faculty in the 

    departments of sociology, psychology, health education, and women’s studies, among 

    others, also teach sexuality courses and participate in our graduate and undergraduate 

    programs.

    The Institute offers excellent administrative support, which minimizes the amount of 

    routine administrative work for this position. The Institute is located in the recently 

    inaugurated SFSU Downtown Campus, 835 Market Street with state‐of‐the‐art research labs, 

    instructional, and conference facilities, accessible by BART and Muni. 

      

    Starting date: Autumn 2008.
